“Since life cannot tolerate a standstill, a damming up of vital anergy results, and this would lead to an insupportable condition did not the tension of the opposites produce a new, uniting function that transcends them”

- Carl Jung, 1926

Hi friends!

A quote that is almost 100 years old somehow rings true in so many ways in 2025.

Jung was saying that life keeps going whether we like it or not and the tension between opposites (ex. consciousness and the unconscious) creates third space or direction for possibility.

This is where you find us now. Life is shades of grays rather than black or white.

It is our perception that adds even more color and dimension to life.

While Chris was wrapping up writing, Katie was busy creating resources that could be a helpful introduction to the kind of work we’ve been doing for years. We’ve distilled it into a small thing we hope will be helpful to others: EMBRACING THE GRAY: YOUR PATH TO CLARITY AND COMPASSION.

Addiction, recovery, and healing are messy.

The gray is the space between what we “know” and what we feel. It’s unique to each person in the way it is experienced, perceived, and assessed.

This doesn’t mean there are immediate answers to the natural questions that arise.

It just means we can find a more authentic way of being if we practice exploring both our conscious and unconscious thoughts.

We want to challenge you to embrace the gray in your life but be sure to:

  • extend plenty of grace to yourself and others

  • give yourself permission to explore, grow, and find yourself

  • maybe even fall in love with yourself

What you’ll need:

  • pen and paper

  • safe, quiet room or space for expansive thoughts

Disclaimer: This can be heavy work. If possible, write out or print off and share this exercise with a therapist, religious advisor, trusted friend, or your partner — can be the person in addiction/recovery OR the loved one!
